The effort to reintegrate Shamrock Gardens, which took place after a court decision forced Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to end its long-renowned busing for desegregation program, got a good bit of play in the local paper. It fit neatly into a standard story line of a white heroine who, as one right-wing critic complained, “controls the universe.” There was a lot more to Shamrock’s success than that, of course, but the favorable publicity helped us in many ways. We got a lot of help from people who learned about and sympathized with the effort, and Shamrock’s visibility definitely bumped us up the scale of CMS priorities.
